Joel McHale Joins Courtney Cox and Isabel May for Scream 7

Sidney Prescott (played by Neve Campbell), the iconic final girl of the Scream franchise, is back in Scream 7—this time with a husband it appears, Mark, played by Joel McHale. McHale’s casting continues to confuse fans about Sydney’s husband, “Mark” but it seems to indicate that Sidney’s spouse might be Detective Mark Kincaid from Scream 3 but that is still not certain. Filming for the movie is currently happening in Atlanta under name “Scar Tissue”.

Scream 7 Cast

McHale’s character is a bit of a mystery since Patrick Dempsey played the character of Detective Mark Kincaid in Scream 3. According to Entertainment Weekly, Dempsey was reportedly in talks to return for Scream 7, but after news broke that McHale had joined the franchise, reps for Spyglass and Dempsey confirmed those talks didn’t pan out. Mark, who was briefly mentioned as Sidney’s husband in 2022’s Scream and said to be “in hiding” in Scream 6, seems to be off the table now. With Dempsey out and McHale stepping in, it looks like director Kevin Williamson and writer Guy Busick will need to tweak the story a bit, possibly making it a different character being referenced instead of Dempsey’s Mark Kincaid. Of course it’s always possible McHale could be playing a character named “Darrin”.

The Scream 7 cast also features franchise veterans Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers and Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks-Martin, along with fan favorite Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, and Anna Camp. Isabel May will play Sidney Prescott’s daughter, last hinted at in the 2022 Scream reboot. Details about the other characters and the plot remain under wraps.

Isabel May has been a fan favorite ever since she starred in the Yellowstone Prequel, 1883. She starred as Elsa Dutton in the Taylor Sheridan one-season show.

Directed by Kevin Williamson, the writer of the original Scream, the movie is based on a script by Guy Busick. Producers James Vanderbilt, William Sherak, and Paul Neinstein, who previously worked on the Scream reboot and Scream VI, are back for this installment under Project X Entertainment. Spyglass and Paramount Pictures have set the release date for February 27, 2026.

The Scream franchise has achieved over $900 million at the global box office, with Scream VI breaking records in 2023 by grossing $108 million domestically. Filming for Scream 7 is underway in Georgia under the code name “Scar Tissue” or “ST.” Background casting is being handled by Rose Locke/CL Casting.
