Alexander Ludwig and Emma Roberts Film ‘Hal’ in Atlanta, Inspired by the True Story of Convoy of Hope

The indie drama Hal, inspired by the true story behind the founding of the humanitarian organization Convoy of Hope, began filming in Atlanta on February 9.

The film is directed by Mark Williams, known for co-creating Netflix’s Ozark and directing films such as The Accountant, Honest Thief, and Blacklight. The screenplay was written by Mark Edwin Robinson, with production handled by Zero Gravity Management, the company behind projects like Beasts of No Nation and Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Alexander Ludwig and Emma Roberts Lead the Cast

The film stars Alexander Ludwig (Vikings, Bad Boys for Life) and Emma Roberts (The Blackcoat’s Daughter, American Horror Story). Joining them in the cast is Ernie Hudson, known for Ghostbusters and the Netflix series Grace and Frankie. Interestingly, Hal also carries a small connection to the Star Wars universe through actor Ernie Hudson. Hudson provided the voice of Gantoris, a Force-sensitive student trained by Luke Skywalker, in the 1994 Star Wars audio drama adaptation of Dark Empire.

While specific character details have not been fully revealed, Ludwig will portray Hal Donaldson, the journalist whose life experiences ultimately lead to the creation of Convoy of Hope. Roberts plays Doree, a talented musician whose relationship with Hal becomes a grounding force as his career and worldview evolve. Hudson’s role has not yet been disclosed.

The Story Behind the Film

Hal tells the true story of Hal Donaldson, a journalist whose early life challenges shape his belief that storytelling can make a difference. As his reporting career takes him to places facing poverty, crisis, and inequality, he begins to question whether documenting suffering is enough.

Over time, the line between observer and participant begins to blur. Encouraged by his relationship with Doree and his experiences in the field, Hal ultimately feels called to take action rather than simply tell stories. That journey leads to the founding of Convoy of Hope, a humanitarian organization that has become known worldwide for disaster relief and community outreach.

The Real Impact of Convoy of Hope

Founded in 1994, Convoy of Hope has grown into a global humanitarian organization delivering hundreds of millions of meals and providing clean water to millions of people around the world. Operating in dozens of countries, the organization is recognized for its large-scale disaster relief efforts, long-term community development programs, and its ability to mobilize partnerships between public and private sectors to reach communities in need.
