Golf Trip, a new comedy from Live Nation Studios, Kevin Hart‘s Hartbeat, and All Things Comedy, got underway in mid-September and has been working its way around the north side of metro Atlanta ever since — with background casting calls for real golfers going out almost weekly.
The project has also changed shape since it was first announced. When it was reported in April, Charlie Day was attached to star and the film was set to shoot in Los Angeles. By the time Deadline broke the news that production had started on September 18, the cast was entirely different and the shoot had moved to Georgia. No reason for the change was given, but the result is a lineup heavy on stand-up comedians — which fits a film about three guys spending a long weekend on a golf course.
What the Film Is About
Three best friends have kept up an annual golf trip for 20 years. This year their usual fourth drops out, and they get paired with the one thing every golfer dreads: the random single. His name is Chuck Wheeler, he’s aggressively friendly, he has no concept of boundaries, and he’s not going anywhere. The round — and the trip — unravel from there. Anyone who has ever been stuck with a stranger for 18 holes already understands the premise completely.
The Cast
Tom Segura plays Chuck Wheeler, the single. Segura is one of the biggest names in stand-up — six Netflix specials, most recently Teacher, two seasons of his Netflix sketch anthology Bad Thoughts, and the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast with Bert Kreischer (whose own Georgia-shot series Free Bert we covered this summer). Segura also executive produces. Casting the most unfiltered comic in the business as the guy nobody wants in their foursome is exactly the right call.
Andrew Santino plays Jason, one of the three friends. Santino co-hosts the Bad Friends podcast with Bobby Lee, starred in Dave on FX, and — relevant here — is a serious golfer who hosts his own golf podcast, No Bad Lies. He also executive produces.
Timothy Simons plays Don. Simons will forever be Jonah Ryan from Veep, one of the great comic creations of the past two decades, and he’s been steadily working since in Nobody Wants This and Candy.
Sinqua Walls plays Mike, rounding out the trio. Walls starred in the 2023 remake of White Men Can’t Jump and has been a regular presence on Power and American Soul.
Heather Graham plays Margo. Graham’s career runs from Boogie Nights to The Hangover, and she most recently appeared in the horror-action-comedy They Will Kill You.
John Stamos plays Ted. Stamos needs little introduction — Full House, ER, Big Shot, and most recently the second season of Apple’s Palm Royale. He’ll also be seen in the second season of Netflix’s The Hunting Wives, which arrives November 26.
The Creative Team
Nicholas Thomas directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Cory Pendergast. Thomas co-wrote the 2014 buddy comedy Let’s Be Cops — which, Georgia readers may remember, filmed in Atlanta. He also executive produces alongside Segura, Santino, and Jeremy Stein, with Aaron Edmonds and Harold Berón III for Hartbeat, and Ryan Kroft and Michael Rapino — Live Nation’s CEO — for Live Nation Studios. All Things Comedy co-CEO Billy Rosenberg produces.
Live Nation Studios is the film and TV arm of the concert giant, and Kroft told Deadline the project is a way of giving the company’s touring comedians a path into scripted work. With Hart’s Hartbeat and the ATC podcast network — which Segura and Santino both call home — also on board, this is very much a comedy-industry in-house production.
Where It's Filming in Georgia
Stone Mountain is the production’s primary base, and the shoot has been bouncing around the northern suburbs. Based on casting calls and production listings, Golf Trip has filmed or is filming in:
- Stone Mountain — home base
- Sandy Springs
- Canton
- Suwanee — golf course scenes filmed October 6–8
Given the premise, expect most of the shoot to be on and around golf courses, with clubhouse, bar, and cart-barn scenes filling in the rest. The production has also put out a call for pageant judges, which raises some interesting questions about where this trip ends up.
Want to Be a Background Extra?
Rose Locke Casting is handling background. Calls so far have included golfers with real experience (you must own your own clubs), bartenders, cart barn staff, golf course maintenance workers, and pageant judges. The golfer rate has been $168 for 12 hours plus a $20 golf club bump. If you play, this is about as good a fit as background work gets — register on Rose Locke’s site and watch their social pages for the next call.
When Can We See It?
No distributor or release date has been announced. With a cast this well-connected across podcasting and stand-up, expect a streamer to pick it up before long — and expect to hear plenty about it on 2 Bears, 1 Cave and Bad Friends in the meantime. We’ll keep you posted.
